Abstract The article provides an overview of high pressure materials chemistry up to megabars of pressure. It begins with a general description of the effect of pressure on the structure of matter and chemical reactions followed by a discussion of practical applications of high pressure chemistry. High pressure apparatuses suitable for hydrothermal and solid‐state high pressure chemistry are described. Examples from high pressure solid‐state and hydrothermal chemistry are given, in particular the high pressure chemistry of carbon, nitrides, and oxides including zeolites. Principles of hydrothermal crystal growth are discussed and illustrated by examples.
