Research progress of the dual regulatory effects of Panax Notoginseng Saponins on angiogenesis

Coronary heart disease(CHD) and malignant tumors are ranked as top two life and health-threatening diseases.The combined existence of both CHD and cancer poses even greater danger to human health.Targeting angiogenesis,either to promote angiogenesis under ischemic conditions or to inhibit angiogenesis to interfere with tumor growth and/or metastasis,has been gaining increased attention to develop the therapeutic effects of TCM.Accumulated evidence has indicated that Panax notoginseng saponins and its active ingredients possess unique pharmacological activities with respect to regulating angiogenesis.They can not only achieve beneficial therapeutic effects in treating ischemic myocardium through promoting neovascularization,but also inhibit tumor growth and metastasis by inhibiting tumor angiogenesis.This paper summarizes the recent comprehensive literature coverage to make a review,which will provide a reference for further in-depth mechanistic and clinical studies.
