The Ellipsoid

Abstract In this chapter we present explicit results for low frequency scattering by a triaxial ellipsoid with semi-axes a 1 > a 2 > a 3 > 0. Results for rotationally symmetric ellipsoids are easily obtained by setting a 2 = a 3 (prolate spheroid) or a 1 = a 2 (oblate spheroid). Results for the sphere may be recovered by a limiting process from either a prolate or an oblate setting, but this is not always a trivial calculation due to the occurrence of indeterminate forms. No such difficulties occur in the reduction of ellipsoids to spheroids.
