摘要
Purpose The heightened complexity of the engineering environment has spawned tremendous investment in megaproject technological innovations. Investigating the intricate evolutionary laws within the megaproject technological innovation collaborative network (MTICN) is imperative for promoting innovation performance. Despite its importance, this area has not been thoroughly explored in existing research. Therefore, this study quantitatively examines the structural characteristics and dynamic evolution patterns of MTICN from temporal and spatial dimensions. Design/methodology/approach This study draws data from China’s Tien-yow Jeme Civil Engineering Prize, employing social network analysis to construct the MTICN and subsequently applies Fisher optimal segmentation to quantitatively delineate the evolutionary stages. Findings Findings on temporal evolution reveal that MTICN exhibits a conspicuous three-phase pattern and state-owned enterprises dominate the network. Organizational types transform from diverse to homogeneous over time, where contractors emerge as pivotal organizations propelling innovation, succeeded by design institutes. Moreover, the network’s spatial distribution is notably concentrated in the economically vibrant eastern and central provinces, with regional disparities becoming more entrenched as the network evolves. Inter-provincial collaboration is a prevalent innovation mode, yet its breadth and depth vary across provinces. Originality/value This paper unveils the underlying collaboration patterns and evolutionary traits among innovation organizations in the context of megaprojects based on social network theory. It enriches theoretical explorations in megaproject innovation management and further extends previous social network research in the construction arena, providing valuable insights for fostering megaproject innovations.
