摘要
Cell culture is the most widely studied method in the field of life sciences. This term is generally used for the removal of cells, tissues or organs from a plant or an animal and their subsequent transfer into an artificial environment supporting their survival. The primary requirements for the optimum growth of cells comprise of regulated temperature, suitable growth medium, substrate for cell attachment and incubator that regulates pH and osmolality. The most crucial stage in cell culture is selecting the suitable growth medium. Cell culture media is the relevant energy source in cell culture that constitutes balance of amino acids, glucose, inorganic salts and serum as a foundation of hormones, growth factors and attachment factors. On the basis of requirement of different cell lines, media is divided into four types: balanced salt solutions (BSS), basal media, complex media and serum-free media. This chapter outlines the media and buffer components and preparation essential for maintaining the cell culture.
