Radix ranunculi ternati (RRT) is widely used as traditional and folk medicine distributed in China, as well as in Kyushu and Shikoku in Japan. Although RRT has a short history of use as medicine, it has a high medicinal value. This study summarizes the research progress on the chemical constituents, pharmacological activity, quality control measures and clinical applications to provide a valuable and exhaustive reference for the development and application of RRT.Phytochemical studies showed that this plant mainly contains glycosides, organic acids, esters, sterols, flavonoids, alkaloids and volatile oils. The pharmacological activity of RRT includes immune regulation, anti-tumour, anti-tuberculosis, antioxidant, antibacterial, hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. This plant is especially effective in the treatment of cancer, tuberculosis, thyroid and nasopharynges disorders.
