OBJECTIVE To describe the mortality and epidemiological characteristics of lung cancer in Guangxi between 2004 and 2005, and analyze the epidemiological trend from 1970’s to 2005. METHODS Multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling method was used to select 9 counties in Guangxi as sample points. The residents’ death causes between 2004 and 2005 were investigated, and the epidemiological characteristics of lung cancer were analyzed. RESULTS In the period of 2004-2005, the crude mortality of lung cancer was 24.54 /100 000 in Guangxi population (33.66/100 000 in men and 14.48/100 000 in women). The national population-standardized mortality (NSM) in 1964 was 13.58 / 100 000. The man-to-woman ratio of mortality was 2.33︰1. Lung cancer ranked as the second death cause among malignant tumors, and lung cancer-related death accounted for 20.79% of all tumor-related death cases. Age-specific mortality of lung cancer was increased with age, rising significantly from 40-year-old. The national population-standardized mortality rates of lung cancer increased from 1.90 / 100 000 in 1970’s to 13.58 / 100 000 in 2005, and the growth rate reached 614.74%. CONCLUSION The mortality of lung cancer shows a increasing trend in Guangxi during this 30 years, the prevention and treatment research of lung cancer still has a long way to go.
