For finding the optimum conditions for hydrogen storage by adsorption on carbon based materials, adsorption data of hydrogen on the activated carbon LY-1 were measured at equilibrium pressure-temperatures from 0.1 MPa to 13 MPa and 113 K to 293 K.Lattice theory was employed to derive an adsorption model.Energy balance of the adsorption equilibrium state, the linear plot of the model and the iteration of the 10-4-3 potential model were respectively carried out to determine the maximum surface concentration, the adsorption potential and the interaction energy among adsorbed hydrogen molecules. Results show that adsorbed hydrogen molecules are in a state of the compressed gas,and that the temperature of the storage system and the surface coverage are two obvious factors influencing the behavior of adsorbed hydrogen molecules. The interaction energy among hydrogen molecules varies more drastically with changes in both the pressure and the surface coverage under a higher temperature, and a higher surface coverage results in a higher increasing rate of the molecular interaction energy with the temperature and the pressure. Conclusions are drawn that the construction of the carbon based materials for hydrogen storage should be improved and that the temperature of the hydrogen storage system needs to be lowered for increasing the total adsorption amount.
