CD36,which is widespread on various tissues involved in fatty acid metabolism and acts as an important fatty acid transporter(FAT),plays an important role in fatty acid metabolism. In regard of the close relationship between fatty acid metabolism and insulin resistance, many researchers have become interested in the mechanisms by which FAT/CD36 may influence the insulin sensitivity and T2DM.Skeletal muscle and adipose tissue are the major organs for FFA oxidation and FFA esterification and storation, respectively, both of which are responsible for reducing fatty acid in circulation through CD36-mediated uptake of FFA.This review will focus on the roles of CD36 in these two tissues, and discuss the potential effects it may have on insulin resistance.
