This paper discusses how the petroleum industry is now moving forward in understanding how gasoline reformulation can reduce gasoline related emissions. Thought reductions in carbon monoxide (CO) are predominately a combustion enleanment phenomena, there appears to be some benefit from reducing fuel carbon content. Reducing tailpipe hydrocarbons and NO{sub x} is a more complicated process, and the influences of other gasoline properties are being studied. Based on available knowledge, it appears ethers have the most favorable properties for modifying or reformulating gasoline.
