This article aims to evaluate the whitening effect of the toothpaste containing 0.875% sodium phytate. 80 participants were randomly assigned to two groups. Two toothpastes were chosen, one of them containing 0.875% sodium phytate (ST) and the other one without sodium phytate to serve as control (CT). The participants were asked to brush their teeth used the toothpaste for four weeks. Teeth color was measured by VITA Easyshade V. The L*, a*, b* value were recorded and the WID value and E value were calculated. The exogenous stain was indicated by stain index. The tooth color and the exogenous stain were assessed at the baseline examination and after 2, 3, and 4 weeks. After four weeks, the a value and b value from ST group were significant lower than CT group(P=0.015, P<0.001), and the L value, WID value and E value in ST group were markedly increased(P<0.001) which means the toothpaste containing 0.875% sodium phytate had significantly whitening effect. However, the ST and CT group toothpaste had same effect of removing exogenous stain(P>0.05). None participants had appeared side effect. The toothpaste contains 0.875% sodium phytate represented an obviously tooth color whitening effect and it did not cause any side effects. Additionally, the whitening effect was enhancing over time. However, all the toothpaste could remove the exogenous stain and there was no difference between the ST and CT groups.
