This article discusses the use of satellite imagery on the Jacksonville Outer Beltway Northern Loop project. The project was 30 miles long and the study area was 91,000 acres in a relatively undeveloped area of Duval County. Satellite imagery not only provided a visual image, it also provided a way to interpret the image to produce data in a digital format. The identification and location of environmentally sensitive areas was accomplished within 45 days, saving approximately 3 1/2 months time that would have been required if traditional methods had been utilized.
