Tubulin is a highly conserved αβ dimeric protein present and is essential for all eukaryotes. αβ-Tubulin dimers assemble into microtubules, dynamic polymers important in a variety of functions, most noticeably, mitosis. Tubulin assembly and disassembly are linked to guanosine triphosphate hydrolysis. A variety of proteins interact with tubulin, affecting the stability of microtubules and their function. Numerous ligands bind to tubulin and influence its assembly properties, among them several drugs that have proved to have anticancer properties. γ-Tubulin is a tubulin isoform involved in the nucleation of microtubules. Additional tubulin isoforms have been recently identified but their functions remain ill-defined.
