Retrospective evaluation of satisfaction levels of completely edentulous patients treated with implant supported prosthesis

Abstract Aim : The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare patient satisfaction levels in edentulous patients treated with implant­ supported overdentures and/or implant supported fixed prostheses. Material and Methods: A study population of 98 patients was identified. Patients seperated into three treatment types. Group I comprised 36 patients treated with implant supported maxillomandibular fixed restorations while group II comprised 43 patients treated with implant supported overdentures. Group III comprised 19 patients treated implant supported overdenture for mandible and fixed prosthesis for maxilla. A questionnaire consisting of specific issues about masticatory performance, aesthetics and comfort were used to evaluate treatment outcomes. Results: The sample comprised 59 female and 39 male patients with a mean age of 67.6 years (range between 40 and 78). The patients in Group II were significantly less satisfied with masticatory function, comfort and social ability. No significant differences were found for satisfaction as compared to educational status and economic status. Conclusions: It was found that treatment design of that implant supported fixed prosthesis on maxilla and implant overdenture on mandible provided comparable level of satisfaction for edentulous patients. Implant supported fixed prosthesis for maxilla and implant supported overdenture for mandible serve practical alternative to satisfy patients especially in mandibular atrophy patients who would demand extensive surgeries.
