摘要
The membrane is a critical functional component of flow batteries (FBs), serves as a physical separation between the FB feeds, and prevents electronic short-circuits. At the same time, the membrane must allow for the selective transport of the ions that are necessary to maintain the overall charge balance in the FB during charge and discharge processes. In this chapter, we first provide an overview of the different features that a membrane must exhibit to ensure an optimal operation in an FB (e.g. ion-exchange capacity (IEC), stability, permselectivity, and water uptake). In the second part, selected promising families of membranes are presented, thus offering a comprehensive cross-section of the extensive state of the art that was devised in the last years to satisfy the specific requirements of the different FB systems. The chapter is concluded with a few highlights suggesting some directions for future developments.
