Abstract After providing the definition of resolution for 2k−pdesigns we present two rationales that justify the practical importance of resolution as a criterion for selecting good fractional designs. Insight is given into designs of resolution III, IV, and V, i.e., the most widespread in practice. Then we describe how to determine the resolution of a design and a simple rule for finding half‐fractions of maximum resolution. Smaller fractions of maximum resolution can be found in specialized books referenced in the text. We also describe some circumstances when the resolution criterion needs to be supplemented or replaced by other user‐relevant criteria.
