The experiments and constitutive formulation of the stressing dilatancy of rock mass are analyzed systematically. Some conclusions have been drawn as follows: the effects of stress on rock mass expansion are described by using the definitions such as pre-peak dilatancy and post-peak bulking;the dilatancy could occur under loading and unloading, but the dilatancy in the latter is larger than that in the former;and the effects of dilatancy are highly suppressed by the confining pressure or intermediate principal stress;also, the derivation of constitutive equation must involve the non-associated flow rule and dilatancy property.Besides, the problems existed in actual researches are also noticed, and the importance of the research on dilatancy are emphasized at last.
