Objective To observe the effects of gum chewing on the recovery of gastrointestinal function after cesarean section.Methods From Jan 2006 to June 2006,120 parturients who underwent cesarean section were selected and randomly separated into two groups.Sixty parturients were asked to chew gum three times after operation.To compare the differences between two groups in complaints such as nausea and abdominal distention,the first passage time of flatus and the first defecation time.Results There were significant differences between gum-chewing group and control group in both first passage time of flatus,first defecation time(P0.01) and occurrence of complaints(P0.05).Conclusion Gum chewing has positive effect on recovery of gastrointestinal function after cesarean section.As a simple,convenient and safe procedure,gum chewing could be used as an accessory therapy in recovery of gastrointestinal function after operation.
