Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) are membrane materials that are extensively used in the construction of large-span structures owing to their excellent performance and low cost. PVC and PVDF membranes are affected by their external environment during use, which causes aging and deterioration of their performance, thus reducing the service performance of the overall structure. Therefore, diverse mechanical properties, tests, elastic–plastic models, and aging mechanisms corresponding to natural and artificial aging (light-induced or high-temperature oxygen aging) are analyzed and compared herein to clarify the fundamental aging characteristics of PVC and PVDF membranes. The aging-related fundamentals of PVC and PVDF membranes are summarized, along with the associated problems. Additionally, suggestions for future studies on these membranes are presented.
