A New Optical Access Network EPON

EPON is a new PON technology for broadband access network that combines passive optical network with Ethernet, it is regarded as the best candidate of the next -generation optical access network. It uses fiber as the transport medium, is designed to carry Ethernet frames. Passive optical splitter fans out to multiple optical drop fibers connected to subscriber nodes.The EPON's maintenance is very simple and EPON have low cost because of passive equipment. This paper introduce the development of the access network, the structure ,the principles and the key technologies of EPON.
