Recent Trends in Transgenic Plants for Enhanced Phytoremediation

Plants can be genetically modified to overcome the immanent limitations of their detoxification abilities, following an approach of generation of transgenic crops capable of transforming the organic forms of contaminants into less toxic and volatile forms. The remediation efficiency of transgenic plants for various soil contaminants has also been reviewed in this chapter. Optimization of several plant processes and mechanisms is required for the proper engineering of phytoremediator plants.
