As space exploration architectures increase in complexity and scope, component systems must meet the needs of these architectures by performing in multiple operational environments and for multiple phases of architectural evolution. The purpose of this study is to propose an approach for investigating the use of system-of-systems engineering principles and methodologies to create system design options that perform effectively at both the system and system-of-systems levels, across multiple concepts of operations, and over multiple systems architectural phases. A preliminary methodology is presented along with its application to the design of power systems for use in NASA’s Constellation Program’s Lunar Surface System Architecture. Also presented are the proposed setup of the application problem and a path forward for implementation of the proposed methodology.
