We introduce the concept of hybrid‑improper ferroelectricity, where spontaneous electric polarization arises from the trilinear coupling of two non‑polar structural distortion modes. This mechanism enables ferroelectricity in magnetic materials without requiring either d⁰ or lone‑pair cations. Using first‑principles calculations, we demonstrate this behavior for the Ruddlesden‑Popper compound Ca 3 Mn 2 O 7 Abstract In this material, two distinct oxygen‑octahedral‑tilt modes, each nonpolar, condense and together induce a spontaneous polarization. Since the ferroelectric instability is driven by octahedral tilts, which also control magnetic superexchange, large magnetoelectric coupling is expected, offering a promising route toward magnetoelectric multiferroics. |
