Do not use a graphic if

▪ the data are better presented in a table
▪ the graphic simply repeats data already presented elsewhere in the text
▪ you are having difficulty finding a place to cite or discuss it in the text
▪ you already have an “excessive” number of graphics (too many graphics can overwhelm the reader and trivialize each of the individual graphics)
▪ the quality of the graphic is poor, i.e., blurry, confusing or misleading, cluttered, poorly drawn

Use a graphic when a visual presentation

▪ improves the effectiveness of the data presentation
▪ provides a better understanding of the results and/or increases the reader’s comprehension
▪ makes it easier to view trends and relationships in the data (relative proportions, magnitudes, etc.)
▪ highlights specific results with quantitative analysis
▪ communicates the information more succinctly than in prose

“Graphics” include a wide range of visuals, including graphs, images, sketches, schemes (sequences of reactions), charts, flow charts, molecular modeling output, and molecular/chemical structures. There is no one set of rules across all journals, so check for journal-specific requirements in the Author Guidelines. Are there any limits to the number of figures allowed? Is there any ratio of text/figures that needs to be followed? A good ratio of text to figures is approximately four-to-one. In articles, six to eight figures are typical, while communications, which are shorter in length, average around two or three figures.
