P Tenge,O Solli It is the object of this paper to describe the consequences of the "leak-before-failure" criterion in the construction of LNG tanks with respect to material and design requirements. The investigation is related to the development of the LNG carriers of Moss-Rosenberg design for different cargo capacities up to 125,000 cu m. Fracture mechanics testing and analysis, as well as detailed stress analysis have been involved. The experimental investigation of both 9 percent Ni-steel and aluminum alloy 5083-0, regarding fatigue crack configuration, propagation rate and critical crack sizes, has demonstrated that the requirements imposed by the "leak-before-failure" criterion are contained. A close agreement between the fracture mechanics analysis and the test results have been obtained. |
