By: Traverso, Giorgio cf. C.A. 53, 21825d. A critical examination of olivil (I) in relation to isoölivil (II) was made by consideration of various oxidations of diacetyldiethylisoölivil (III) and diacetyldimethylisoölivil (IV) and of products obtained by partial and alternate alkylation of I and II. Various intermediates were synthesized and new steric formulas for I discussed. Dimethylisoölivil (V) (2 g.) kept 12 hrs. at room temperature in 12 ml. C5H6N with 4 ml. Ac2O diluted at 0° with 20 ml. H2O and acidified with a slight excess of dilute H2SO4, the crystalline precipitate washed with H2O and the dried product recrystallized (MeOH) gave IV, m. 150°, also obtained by refluxing 2 g.
