Treatment of toxic chemical wastes at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory

A review of the methods of treating of variety of toxic liquid wastes routinely handled at LASL will be presented.These wastes include heavy metal cyanide solutions, metal-containing acid pickling baths, fluoride cleaning solutions, and chromic acid.The goal of the treatment is to render the toxic elements of the waste insoluble or nontoxic so they can be buried on-site with a minimum of risk to the environment.
