Summary Subsurface structural modeling and meshing are essential to subsurface monitoring and characterization. Meshing subsurface models, however, remains a challenge for many practitioners. The main bottleneck often comes from creating a sealed surface structural model from user input data, since once such a surface model is available, a handful of free and open source software will readily generate a volume mesh conformably to the surface model. This paper presents an alternative approach to subsurface meshing that bypasses the creation of a sealed surface model altogether and generates a volume mesh directly from user input data. The sealed surface model, if needed, is obtained as a byproduct.
