The study of superstitions was especiallyanthropological until 1950. Anthropologists havestruggled to list superstitions around the world and tried tofind the origin and to distinguish them from religion andscience. A number of studies suggest that most peoplebelieve in the existence of at least one paranormal orcombinations of several paranormal. In the last threedecades, several major social trends have helpedpopularize several varieties of superstition and belief inthe paranormal. Particularly in the 1970s and 1980s, butcontinuing to this day, the New Age movement hasrejected modern science, technology and Orthodoxreligion, giving new life to old superstitions andintroducing new ones.
