The dynamic behavior of foam-filled negative Poisson’s ratio beam (FNPRB) under low-speed impact is studied analytically and numerically in this work. The analytical solution for the dynamic behavior of foam-filled negative Poisson’s ratio beam is derived on the basis of the yield criterion. The numerical calculations are conducted. Theoretical results are consistent with finite element results. The influences of foam strength, negative Poisson’s structure width and foam thickness on the crashworthiness of foam-filled negative Poisson’s ratio beams are discussed. In the discussions on effects of parameters, it is considered the effect of the total weight of the sandwich beam due to the parameter change, a dimensionless quantity to study the influence of parameters on sandwich beams is defined. It is shown that foam strength and foam thickness play significant roles in influencing the low-speed impact of the foam-filled beam with negative Poisson’s ratio.
