The effect of Ge substitution on phase transformation and magnetic properties of MnBi alloys

The Mn55Bi45-xGex intermetallic compound with x ≤ 4 was prepared and compared by annealed ribbons and powder metallurgy. Substituting Ge in the MnBi alloy significantly alters the phase transformation temperatures, enhances the coercivity (Hc), and improves the squareness. As the Ge concentration increased from 0 at.% to 4 at.%, both the crystalline size of low-temperature phase MnBi in annealed ribbons and ball-milled powders demonstrated a gradual decrease, while lattice strain exhibited an upward trend. The Hc of Mn55Bi41Ge4 powder reaches 14.1 kOe, which is 33 % higher than that of pure MnBi powder, making MnBi-Ge an ideal candidate magnet for the next generation of rare-earth-free magnets.
