Application of the Gini coefficient in studies of spatial inequality in agglomerations of regions

Strengthening the economic role of urban agglomerations is a global trend. The economic benefit from the merging of economic resources becomes possible due to agglomeration effects that trigger the accumulative process of space development. The increase in market capacity and business activity, intensive interaction in the labor market and the exchange of knowledge stimulate the development of the space. However, the negative side of agglomeration processes is the resource exposure of peripheral territories and the decrease in the standard of living of the population on the outskirts of the region. More attractive working conditions and wages in the core of the agglomeration lead to inequality in the distribution of income among the population of the region. The article examines economic inequality in the Moscow region using a popular indicator - the Gini coefficient. The author describes the reasons for the differentiation of wages among the population, provides calculations and shows the dynamics of the change in the Gini coefficient.
