In case of the study of the basic point of view on the surface decoration of the Neolithic era, the pottery belongs to the most useful material. The surface decoration of the Neolithic era’s pottery has a variety of way818, such as the way to press or scratch a pattern, the way to grind the surface smoothly, the way to express the pattern by using the pigment, etc. Among them the first two ways are used most actively.BR This thesis, considering mainly the pottery of the relatively earlier period, studied the standpoint on the surface decoration with the desire of the decoration, the aspect of the appearance of the concept and the case that the pottery was used differently from the natural purpose. And the results of the study can be summarized like the following.BR The interest in the surface decoration of the pottery was so high from the early Neolithic era and it seems to have been more expanded around 5000 B.C. that the kinds of the decoration pattern increased so much and the decoration condition became more sophisticated to decorate even the pottery bottom with the fine geometric design, to dress the surface of the pottery after polishing the surface and to decorate one pottery with many patterns.BR With the surface decoration of the pottery of the Neolithic era, the intention to improve the function and deliver the special meaning doesn’t appear considerably. So based upon what appears superficially, the intention is found to make the surface look good.BR Because of the limit of the material on the decoration concept, it isn’t easy to check the details. But it can be checked clearly that the certain decoration concept appeared and was being applied already in a relatively earlier period. Especially with the diversion of the use of the pottery, the interest and desire of the surface decoration looks to increase more. BR These facts become the grounds supporting that the purpose of the surface decoration of the Neolithic era wasn’t confined to making the surface good simply. And they become the important grounds in understanding of the background behind the active appearance of the interest in the decoration.BR
