SEVERENS, Roberts and Card (1945) reported the effect of various sulfonamides in reducing mortality from pullorum disease in the domestic fowl. Sulfadiazine and sulfamerazine were found to be the most effective judged by both mortality and rate of gain of surviving chicks. The other sulfonamides used were sulfaguanidine, sulfasuxidine, phthalylsulfathiazole, sulfathiazole, and sulfanilamide. The results to be reported in the present paper are based on further work with sulfamerazine and tests of sodium sulfamerazine, and Soluble Sulfonamide No. II. The composition of sodium sulfamerazine is 92% sulfamerazine and 8% sodium, while that of Soluble Sulfonamide No. II is 80% sulfamerazine, 10% sulfathaladine and 10% sodium carbonate (monohydrate).
