The beam quality concept applied to high power lasers

We define and discuss the M2 factor—a new concept for characterizing the beam quality of any real laser beam and for describing the beam propagation. This factor is directly related to the minimum attainable spot size or the minimum divergence for a given laser beam. It was recently chosen as an international standard for beam quality.
