The purpose of this article is to present a table of caloric expenditure values for running that can be used to augment diet control plans. These values allow the individual to include both energy input and output in his reduction program, thereby increasing the accuracy of obtaining a negative caloric balance. The values were obtained from a formula based on the linear relationship of running speed and energy cost. The data highlight the relatively small caloric expenditure experienced in short bouts of exercise, but it is important to include this contribution in most weight reduction programs.
