摘要
Purpose High-quality teaching is widely recognized as a fundamental factor in student success, yet countries vary significantly in how they cultivate effective teachers. This comparative study examines how teacher effectiveness is shaped by recruitment practices, building teacher ideologies and pedagogical approaches in Finland, Japan and India, using a systematic literature review approach. Design/methodology/approach The qualitative study adheres to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, ensuring a thorough and transparent review. A total of 86 studies were carefully screened and selected based on rigorous quality assessment criteria. Findings Findings indicate that Finland’s teacher recruitment focuses on high academic qualifications and intensive training, underscored by a culture of trust and autonomy. Japan emphasizes continuous professional development and moral education, fostering a strong teacher–community relationship. These two globally successful nations’ emphases on rigorous teacher training, continuous professional development, teacher respect and strong teacher autonomy provide a model for fostering skilled, motivated and effective teachers. India, however, faces challenges, varying recruitment standards coupled with high levels of corruption, declining teacher respect, increasing political meddling and teacher-dominated pedagogy, in stark contrast to Finland’s liberal education and Japan’s value orientation. Research limitations/implications Insights from this comparative analysis are intended to inform policy adjustments and professional development frameworks, aiming to enhance teacher effectiveness, teaching standards and ultimately enhance student outcomes in Indian schools. Originality/value This study explores factors influencing teacher effectiveness in three countries, ensuring authenticity and scholarly integrity through independent research data, analysis and interpretation.
