Abstract The 4f-4f transitions absorb electric dipoles, magnetic dipoles, or even higher electrical multiple radiations. These electric dipole transitions in the 4fn configuration are parity forbidden, however, as a result of the interaction of the central lanthanoid ion and surrounding ligands mixing into a 4fn con- figuration with configurations of an opposite parity which relaxes the parity restrictions. Judd [l J and Ofelt [2] independently developed the model for de- riving oscillator strengths of the intra4fn transitions and lanthanoid by con- sidering mixing of the excited states of parity different than the fn state into the fn state.
