摘要
A sense of belonging is important for the success of all learners in school. If students are not well connected socially, they may feel they do not belong in school and may experience challenges forming positive peer relationships. This can result in students being at increased risk of loneliness, social anxiety, bullying and marginalisation. A sense of belonging at school and positive peer relationships can also reduce the risk of long-term poorer wellbeing and quality of life outcomes. Educators and the school environment play a critical role in promoting a sense of belonging for all children that facilitates the development of secure, respectful peer relationships. This chapter discusses a framework with three reciprocal domains of attitudes and expectations, opportunities, and individual skills as a way of thinking about how schools can promote a sense of belonging and positive peer relationships for all students and particularly marginalised students.
