Although contact stress is one of the most important factors for gear design, the contact stress between tooth flanks of gears has not been measured experimentally. The present paper describes experimental measurement of contact stress between tooth flanks of spur gears which are subject to a static load. For this purpose, designed and manufactured was a new experimental apparatus which enables various misalignments and a static load to be given to spur gear pair. In order to measure contact stress, a pressure measurement film was used. The film enables contact stress between tooth flanks of gears to be measured.
