OBJECTIVE To investigate the permeabilities of apigenin and naringenin across the jejunal, ileal and colonic membranes in rats.METHODS The cumulative permeation amounts and the permeabilities(Papp) of apigenin and naringenin via rat intestinal membranes in both absorption(M-S) and secretion(S-M) direction at the concentration of 50 μmol·L-1 were evaluated by the method of Ussing Chamber. The concentrations of apigenin and naringenin in the receptor samples were determined by HPLC.RESULTS The permeabilities of apigenin and naringenin across the colonic membrane were significantly higher than those across jejunal(P0.01) or ileal(P0.05) membrane. And the permeability of apigenin in the colonic membrane from the mucosal to serosal direction was significantly greater than that from the mucosal to serosal direction(P0.01).CONCLUSION The permeabilities of apigenin and naringenin across the jejunum, ileum and colon in rats exhibit regional differences, which show the highest in the colon. In addition, the transport of apigenin and naringenin may be regulated by some transporters besides passive diffusion.
