P15.04: Role of maternal age in sonographic prediction of miscarriage in pregnant women with 1st‐trimester bleeding

To evaluate the prognostic role of maternal age in pregnant women with 1-trimester bleeding. Between January 2004 and February 2005 all pregnant women⩽13 weeks attending the emergency room for bleeding were submitted to transvaginal ultrasound. The occurrence of miscarriage (⩽24 weeks) was investigated in all cases. Among the 141 women studied, miscarriage occurred in 105 (74.5%). Mean maternal age was 34.4 ± 5.8 years, with 29 pregnancies in women aged ≥ 40. In this latter group the occurrence of miscarriage was significantly more likely (OR:5.59; 95%CI:1.2–24.9); also after sonographic detection of a intrauterine sac (OR:7.08; 95%CI:1.5–33.3) or of a viable embryo (OR:12.75; 95%CI: 1.6–100). Maternal age ≥ 40 seems to be the strongest predictor of miscarriage in pregnant women with 1-trimester bleeding.
