摘要
In this research commentary, we describe the connections between problem posing and mathematical modeling as domains of mathematics education research. We document an unexpected apparent scarcity of problem posing in the mathematical modeling literature and provide some recommendations to better position problem posing as an integral part of research related to the teaching and learning of mathematical modeling. We call more broadly for the field to design and conduct modeling research that reflects problem posing as an integral part of building mathematical models. Moreover, we suggest that mathematics education researchers would benefit from looking to research in overlapping domains to inform and extend their work.
