Abstract The theoretical underpinnings of the Freundlich adsorption isotherm, an often useful empiricism, are discussed. It is shown that the Freundlich expression does not originate from a true exponential distribution of energies of adsorption for the adsorption sites. However, at low solute concentration, a certain energy distribution which is semi-exponential in nature does lead to the Freundlich expression. KEYWORDS: AdsorptionIsothermFreundlich
