Novel bidirectional WDM network based on add-drop multiplexers

A novel bidirectional WDM network which is realized by several add-drop multiplexers connected with single-mode fibers is proposed. The add-drop multiplexers are based on the acousto-optic effect and the reflective property of Bragg gratings. The results obtaining from the theoretical analysis and experiment demonstrate that the add-drop multiplexers allow adding/dropping a certain optical channels. The bidirectional WDM network can be designed as it is required so that the optical signals with certain wavelengths can be added or dropped at the add-drop multiplexers located at certain positions and the optical signals can be transmitted in the designed paths of the WDM network.
