Dispersion polymerization in inorganic salts solution is a kind of green polymerizations. In order to shorten the process engineering of dispersion polymerization and enhance the flocculation performance of linear cationic polyacrylamide, the two-stage feeding method was employed to synthesize cationic polyacrylamide dispersions, and the modified cationic polyacrylamide was synthesized by adding the vinyl isobutyl ether to copolymerize. The structures of cationic polyacrylamide and modified cationic polyacrylamide were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic(FT-IR). Then the two kinds of polymers with similar cationic degrees were applied to flocculate kaolin suspensions. It is found that the polymer modified by vinyl isobutyl ether has better flocculation performance by comparing the turbidities of the supernatates, fractal dimensions and compressive yield stresses.
