Ammonium Polyphosphate (APP)-pentaerythritol(PER)-melamine(MEL) copolymer is selected as an intumescent flame retardant (IFR), it has synergist flame retardant effect between coal and montmorillonite, and it affects the flame retardanted property of coal-based polyethelyene/montmorillonite composites. A little montmorillonite can greatly improve the limiting oxygen index(LOI) of polyethelyene. The given content of coal can improve greatly the limiting oxygen index(LOI) of polyethelyene/montmorillonite composites. Coal and montmorillonite and intumescent flame retardant (IFR) have good synergist flame retardant effects. And the synergist effects of coal, montmorillonite and intumescent flame retardant can improve the limiting oxygen index(LOI) of polyethelyene enormously. Thermo-oxidative degradation and real time FT-IR data show that the synergist flame retardanted effect of coal and montmorillonite and intumescent flame retardant in with to coal-based polyethelyene/montmorillonite composites has good heat stabilization and upper char rates greatly.
