A procedure to determine optimal bolt preload using computer-aided engineering(CAE) technology, especially the finite element method, has been developed for the joint where the stiffness is significant. It is demonstrated that the procedure determines systematically and reliably the preload of connecting-rod bolts in internal combustion engines. That is, the construction and verification of finite element model, the criteria to assess the sufficiency of joint stiffness and fatigue durability, and the procedure to apply the criteria to determine the proper preload systematically are introduced.
