Effect of micro-texture on tensile properties and room-temperature stretch formability of Mg-Al-Zn alloy sheet

The effect of “micro-texture” on tensile properties and room-temperature stretch formability of Mg-Al-Zn alloy sheet was investigated. The micro-texture was successfully introduced in the Mg-Al-Zn alloy sheet by solution-treatment, hot-rolling, and post-annealing. The fraction of unique texture component ((0001) poles being tilted by 50° or more from the sheet normal direction) increased slightly, which improved a limiting dome height from 5.1 mm to 7.0 mm without loss of the strength owing to high activity of tensile twinning and little change in the Schmid factor for basal slips. The finding emphasizes the importance of “micro-texture” designing for the development of magnesium alloy sheets with high strength-formability synergy.
