Design of small wedding clothing applying Korean traditional costume

The current wedding has been standardized with the characteristics of industrialization and corporatization. Due to wedding products, similar types and composition of wedding appear. As people believe that it is ‘just one time of lifetime’, they invest lots of money in marriage articles, wedding presents, and ceremony. The excessive consumption for wedding not only causes many social problems, but also increases the burden of wedding expenses. Recently, young people pay attention to ‘small wedding’ as an alternative. Small wedding is a new wedding culture generated by a desire for rational wedding by reducing the size of wedding ceremony, on top of considering personal happiness and satisfaction as essential values, and also presenting a memorable and individual wedding differentiated from standardized weddings. This study aims to suggest the costume in the form of one-piece and two-piece suit applying Korean traditional costume in accordance with the simplified small wedding as the recent wedding culture. It produced the one-piece design by choosing men’s outer clothing in diverse forms after excluding fancy traditional wedding costume like ceremonial robes, and also two-piece design applying skirt and upper garment in accordance with the simplified small wedding. The objective of this study is to suggest the high value-added design with traditional meanings, by developing the small wedding costume design combined with the formative characteristics of Korean traditional costume and modernly applying the traditional costume. Its significance is to establish the identity of Korean wedding culture by expanding the range of small wedding costume market and also adding the traditional value and meaning. With the development of design combined with the formative characteristics of Korean traditional costume and small wedding costume as a new wedding culture, this study aimed to contribute to the vitalization of traditional costume, and also to suggest the differentiation of researches on wedding costume design. It is expected to be an opportunity to suggest a new and unique trend of original wedding costume applying Korean traditional costume, and also to be able to develop the wedding costume industry equipped with global competitiveness.
